Contrary to what their name implies, a heat pump system doesn’t just offer heat it offers air conditioning also. A heat pump is an energy efficient alternative to furnaces, air conditioners and other conventional heating and cooling systems. The team at Paramount Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning has seen an upward trend in the installation of heat pumps as homeowners desire efficiency matched with affordability.
What does a heat pump do?
The best way to compare their operations is to that of a refrigerator which uses electricity to transfer heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and warm space warmer. Depending on the season and what you’re using the heat pump for it can either take heat from the outdoors (even when cold outside!) to warm your home or pull cool air from warm summer days to cool your home.
Since a heat pump system is not actually generating its own heating and cooling, rather, it is pulling it from the outdoors, it’s a very energy efficient means to providing comfortable temperatures throughout your home.
According to the Department of Energy, air-source heat pumps like the style we mentioned above can reduce your electricity use for heating by approximately 50% compared to other electric heating means.

No Ducts? No Problem!
The HVAC specialists here at Paramount Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning also frequently recommends heat pump units as a way to condition a space that does not have duct work available. These specialized units are often referred to as Ductless Mini Splits and they are exactly that, ductless. While there is minimal wiring and tubing involved, these units are great options for spaces that don’t have existing ductwork or where supplemental heating and cooling is needed, such as a basement or loft space. Contrary to installing large ductwork that requires tearing down walls and ceilings Ductless Mini Splits generally only require a three-inch hole in a wall for the conduit (wiring and tubing) between the indoor and outdoor unit.
Since Ductless Mini Splits are a direct source of heating and cooling and no air is having to travel through ductwork, they also avoid energy losses associated with the ductwork of central air systems which can account for more than 30% of energy consumptions in homes, especially where ductwork is exposed to unconditioned spaces.
Correct installation means Energy Savings!
When installed correctly and at peak efficiency by the team at Paramount Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, an air-source heat pump system can deliver up to three times more energy to a home than the energy it consumes. Again, this energy savings is due to the method at which air-source heat pumps operate, by taking warm or cool air from the outside space.
Originally only available in areas that avoided subfreezing temperatures, air-source heat pumps have advanced in their technology to now be able to generate heat even from some of the coldest outside temperatures, making it a legitimate heating alternative, even in some of the coldest regions.
As with any HVAC installation or upgrade the team at Paramount Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning has the customers satisfaction in mind. When meeting with the team at Paramount to discuss your heating and cooling options, we always take into account your budget and desires and match systems to best fit your needs.
How heating efficiency is measured
Heating efficiency for the air-source heat pumps we have mentioned is measured by the HSPF, which is the heating season performance factor while the cooling efficiency is measured in SEER which is the season energy efficiency ratio.
In general, the higher the HSPF and SEER the higher the cost of the unit. While these units can (not always) see a higher initial cost, the energy savings can return your initial investment several times over during the life of your heat pump. In situations where the team at Paramount is replacing an outdated or inefficient system, a heat pump will use much less energy, substantially reducing heating and cooling costs.
